Unexpected ending! I enjoyed the buildup of the tension, the descriptions of everything around, and especially the dialogue and perspectives of forgiveness. Such a beautifully written piece.
Marvelous pieces. What I adored most was the language and tension between Cali’s disguised feelings of pain, resentment, and apprehension. Untoward forgiveness when the chocolate mousse stained her vanilla dress. And she was called out by her previous comment as Viv reminds her,
“some people don't deserve forgiveness, they should be reminded of their wrongdoing every chance. You felt it important for others to be marked and then the same happened to you.”
It seemed like Cali’s entitled evening was a divine intervention by an elegant and eccentric woman called to remind her of the definition of avoidant forgiveness
“Do you think it's Karma?”
“What do you mean?”
Cali didn't think this far in reverse until she was flayed by the wisdom of Viv
“Energy sent to the shore comes back to the sea; I think the falling mousse was a wave returning.”
The language was rich, too, and profound in The House Of Beautiful things such as,
• “…privilege of seeing Viv in this altered state
• Gravity loves to prove its worth when I’m eating chocolate and wearing light colors
• “…even the klutz who spilled chocolate mousse on themselves.”
• “Enough to clay her with their point of view.”
Last but not least,
• “It’s the beauty laying in flush façade, escaping detection by those not in the know.”
She alluded by dressing down with the writer’s symbolism indicative to challenge her apprehension eyeball to eyeball.
In closing, The mission of The House Of Beautiful was to clarify Cali’s pain and define the character of her forgiveness.
Preston, your feedback is always so rich. Thank you for reading and sharing what resonated with you. And you’re right, Cali didn’t want to offer forgiveness but there was a forgiveness of sort in her ability to remove the stain from her dress. I wanted her hypocrisy to be plain.
It seemed the more she wrapped the chocolate the more the stain became this tinged into febricity of character defect and short coming. So, it was necessary for Viv to lower her teeth right down to the surgical theme. Love this piece.
Everytime I think about the theme The House Of Beautiful Things with its multi-layers of textures and meaning influenced at conscious or subliminal I extract from the it significant content.
So rich when the magic beyond the writing becomes so all alive that the power of influence become this huge tantacle in Viv’s diverse ne mission that connects life on life terms.
In some experiences I think we all have upon some time and space experience someone like Viv’s character with her elegance and eccentricity and the avoidant self trying to prevent like appearing this monster in the inward wo/man psyche.
In closing dear, please know Rachel Leeke Alexis The House Of Beautiful Things have written in taste and delicacy joins World Classic Literature of quality, lets say of one of my favorite short stories, The Neckles by the French author Guy de Maupassant.
P.S.
when I read The Neckles by the French author Guy de Maupassant while I was behind the BIG WALL deep down in the cluttered of my mind lack of translucency interpretation of what was happening to me after reading classic literature and especially Nkack Literature life ke Richsrd Wright Black Boy, Ralph Ellison The Invisible Man, Malcom X Autoboography, Sidney Sheldon Eye Of The Needle, and Elton Clay Fax, a prolific African-American cartoonist, author, and illustrator, but I knew I world write one day.
Yet, since I was pushed out of public schools in the Bronx, USA as a subject of adhd/functional illiterate in NYC for one or two reasons I am still defining and interpreting that page in my becoming The Man And Writer I Am Today.
I am have so many stories inside of me that I must write for posterity and my oldest daughter (a story in time of her abandonment etc).
Again Thank you at the Desk of Rachel Leeke for all you do.
I have so much to say about that The House Of Beautiful Things. Viv showed Cali when you forgive it feels like you are losing yourself and the offender is winning. But as she Viv indicated you are supposed feel like you are losing because you are losing this mask of all sorts of imagery used in theatrics. Not only are removing the mask, you are also removed the shackles from the offender.
With that said, there are so many layers in your short story The House Of Beautiful Things relevant to real time lessons, education, and experiences that teach life for a life.
the discussion of forgiveness hit me like a semi. i want them to be marked forever because i feel marked forever by my own wrongdoings. i feel like i dont deserve to heal or move on from my pain, like everytime i hurt someone, i get another scarlet letter. "forgiving someone feels like letting my guard down." much to think about 😭😭😭😭😭 this was so insanely gorgeously written. these characters have a very real viscerality about them that doesn't want to end.
Thanks so much for reading Ezra. I’m so glad the forgiveness piece resonated, that’s what I wanted, a chance to inspect our humanness within hipocracy and projection. In all honesty I wanted to write about forgiveness but didn’t have the words for a personal essay so I buried it within fiction. I’m glad the message still got across.
Yes the tension was definitely palpable! Ha, I loved the way you managed that while describing so clearly the room/environment they were in.
Thank you, Deirdre! I hold your feedback dear!

Thanks for sharing what elements you enjoyed Shailla. I thought the twist at the end would be fun.

I haven’t read the Necklace yet, but if it’s a classic I’ll have to check it out. Thanks. Enjoy the writing process!
